AmeriCorps is the national service program that engages thousands of Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in communities throughout the nation.
Three programs provide service opportunities for AmeriCorps members:
AmeriCorps State and National offers service opportunities of all kinds in thousands of programs throughout the United States. Members help address unmet community needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Members serve full or part time for nine to 12 months or during the summer, up to two years. Their service might include restoring parks, tutoring youth, assisting crime victims, and building homes.
AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is dedicated to eliminating poverty by helping individuals and low-income neighborhoods make positive changes for themselves. Through AmeriCorps VISTA, ordinary people provide extraordinary service in more than 1,200 projects nationwide. AmeriCorps VISTA members serve full time - 12 months - in hundreds of organizations throughout the country - working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, increase housing opportunities and prevent foreclosure. When VISTA members complete their service, they leave behind lasting solutions to some of our country's toughest problems.
AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is a full-time, team-based residential program for men and women aged 18 to 24. The NCCC is built on the belief that civic responsibility is an inherent duty of all citizens and that national service programs work effectively with local communities to address pressing needs. AmeriCorps NCCC requires an intensive, 10-month commitment. Members are trained in CPR, first aid, and mass care before deploying for their first service project.
AmeriCorps members receive a small living allowance and access to health benefits. Some programs provide housing, and some may cover relocation expenses. Members may qualify for life insurance and childcare assistance. After a term of service, they may receive an Eli Segal Education Award to be used toward future education or to repay student loans.
To qualify for AmeriCorps, you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident, and be at least 18 years old.
